Liposarcoma is the most common soft tissue sarcoma of the adult life, but it is very likely that future acounts of this neoplasm will reveal a slightly lower incidence because some of them formerly diagnosed as the liposarcoma began to be
reclassified
as malignant fibrous histiocytoma after its recognition in 1964. But this neoplasm is familiar with us ad still considered to be the most type. The major sites of liposarcoma are the extremities, particularly the thigh, usually deep seated and
closed to
the neurovascular structure, therefore there are many troubles in the management under the principle of the limb salvage. Prognosis are related to histologic type, grade, surgical stage and tumor size. Nine cases of the liposarcoma treated at the
department of orthopedic surgery, Hanynag University Hospital since 1981 were reviewed, and the suggestions are as follows:
1. Tumor size is unrelated to tumor type and grade.
2. Multiple specimens at different areas are needed for diagnosis.
3. Prognosis is related to histological grade.
4. When the surgery is difficult under the principle, preoperative and postoperative adjunctive therapy is highly recommended.
